  14. <p>    DIED. Jean Arthur, 90, quick-witted comedic film and stage
  15. actor; in Carmel, Calif. Born Anna Green in Plattsburgh, N.Y.,
  16. in 1900, she chose her professional name in honor of two of her
  17. heroes: Jeanne d'Arc and King Arthur. After a successful early
  18. career in silent motion pictures, she was featured in three hit
  19. films directed by Frank Capra: Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936),
  20. You Can't Take It with You (1938) and Mr. Smith Goes to
  21. Washington (1939). Her performance with Alan Ladd in the classic
  22. western Shane (1953) won critical acclaim.
